"You Sit Down to Write" by Smurph

You sit down to write
And there is a sloth about your neck.
The words flow like marbles, dropping individually to the paper, dammed back
By the droop of your eyelids
And the tremors in your hands.
The face of the clock is blurring
But you know it isn’t late enough
So you push the heavy creature aside
And you keep writing.

You sit down to write
And there are moths fluttering in your chest
Making a home inside your ribs
Lifting, everything becoming that much lighter
And the words float out of you
Like each is a single gossamer insect
Seeking the light.

You sit down to write
And there’s a dragon clawing at your throat.
You can feel its breath sting your eyes
And the words roar out of your pen
Burning the page
Then extinguished by the tears that quickly follow.
It escapes from you in bursts of heat
And bloody anger
And it flies away
Leaving behind the taste of ash in your throat
And the promise of return.

You sit down to write
And there is something inside you
Deeper than the moths.
If you turn your head quickly enough
You can see feathers
And hear the beat of fragile wings.
This is the most valuable creature
And the only one
That will not fly away.

Treasure it.

“Change Your Perspective” by Blabbering Becky

I know I have to keep fighting every day
The world is rough on me
I stand up ready to fight
But, I keep falling back down
I clean all the wounds and cuts off myself
Yet, there are continuous beatings on my body
I tell myself that I can get through this
All I want to do is give up, though
I take one last chance to fight for myself
I feel like I can’t do it anymore
 I’ve been through too much
But, I see a bright light at the end of the journey
It’s just a glimpse
I’m wrong if I think I can get through this
Problems take over my whole body
There’s no point anymore
The flicker of hope I had is now gone
I finally come to the conclusion
Is it even worth fighting for myself?

(Now read from bottom to top)

"An Ode to Wendy's" by Latty Pax

The smell of warmth and cheerfulness,
Is my favorite part, I must confess,
I sit and wait, my stomach feels dead,
I start begging to the girl whose hair shines bright red.

I make my order like a architect sculpting a statue,
I get so excited I dash for the loo.
The tantalizing sound of the fryers leaves me shaking,
The constant pouring of the fountain sodas leaves me quaking.

I sit like a king at my usual table,
My stomach rumbles and whinnies, like horses in the stable.
The cashier calls my number, I sprint to the counter like an Olympic runner.

My wait is finally complete,
The spread is so breathtaking I am unable to speak.
My heartbeat rises like a tsunami on the high seas.

My stomach and I want to thank you, Wendy’s.

"My Day as a Dog" by Raekwon Tha Chef

My oh my… that behind on that Rottweiler
I pee on what I want, some call me a colonizer
I chase tails and balls all around the house
But I am not a cat, so I will not catch that mouse
When my human leaves the house I begin to cry out
And on special occasions I will sleep on the couch
I love it when the humans rub and scratch
And the best feeling is finding that perfect patch of grass
Some people say I am the human’s best friend
Because I will guard the house from mailmen to the earth’s end
When I sleep I cannot hold back those innocent toots
And when my butt itches I cannot help but to scoot
In the art of pottey training, I have been tutored
But I am no longer alpha, for I have been neutered
Whenever I roll over, I will receive a treat I have been told
But I always get frostbite because my nose is cold
Sometimes I am punished because I am a dirty slob

But I know my human will always love me, because I am his dog

"After the Fact" by C.T. Ruth

As I drive through the winding roads insecurities flush my face
"What if I was wrong" is a question that seems to bounce off the rocky mountains surrounding me
You said "things would be different if"
I think of exchanges we shared and the way your face scrunched up when you laughed
You remind me of the good and well and new
"But" my head yearns
I can not be yours
I can not live chasing after "if only"s

My mind drifts as the road dives deeper toward the foot of the mountains and your smile fades into thoughts of what is ahead.

"Ode to Bologna" by Aria M.

O Bologna, O Bologna, you divine lunch meat
No matter how hard other meats try, you just cannot be beat!
Your flavor is amazing, and it is oh so unique
You are so very splendid, I could eat you thrice a week!
So pink, smoked, red, and tender you are
In fact, when I think about it, your flavor is quite bizarre
So many nitrates and chemicals can be found
Inside your processed patties!
If I drop you on the ground,
The dog won’t even eat you!
You bring the dog much fright
With your disgusting, sticky flavor,
I’ll be throwing up all night!
O Bologna, you’re so icky, you weird and pungent freak!
You reek! Your flavor is so bleak, it makes me just yell “EEK!”
So Bologna, O Bologna, you devilish lunch meat,

No matter how hard you’ll ever try, you will always be beat!

"What is an Immigrant?" by Martha B.

               What is an immigrant?

What does an Illegal immigrant look like?

I saw one that looked like the desert, a little rough around the edges and humbly dry.

An illegal immigrant looks like a coin, a penny maybe, tails up on the asphalt, dropped from the group of quarters.

She looks like dirty rough towels and bleached sheets tucked tight into never ending beds, fifteen stories tall.

they look like a purple grape, bruises confused for stains, picked by the millions for only a few coins of that million, Could you spare a little more?

surely you can

he looks like that boy over there, I never bothered to learn his name but his lunch is green wrapped in a soggy paper towel and it  reeks

What does an illegal immigrant taste like?

she tastes like chili powder, tingly on your tongue, on lips like America

he tastes like tears, salty and sweet on a set of cheeks that are too thin for the pair of bones protruding from his face

What does an illegal immigrant feel like?

He feels like rain pelting on the back of a worn out plaid shirt, dry and re-dry unknowing if it’ll survive another rain storm. Maybe this time the water will leak through the material and into his heart

but it never does, it never does.

An immigrant looks like the Chinese Exclusion act, he looks like a man sitting on a bench in Arizona wanting to hide himself, did he bring along his papers? but how can he hide himself?

she looks like food, fried and baked, behind a counter and she’s sorry, she is, and she’d like to get to know you.

an illegal immigrant looks like a ship, in 1492 sailing for the ocean blue

So what exactly does an immigrant look like?

they look familiar

Kind of like me, like my mom and my dad

and if you look closely enough they look a little like you.

"One Day" by Marsha Mellow

It only takes a moment when it happens.
you might blink, or take a little too long to get yourself straight
one day.
It’ll just take one
one day and the rest of your life, however short, however complicated, however tragic
one day, thats it.
his one day came on that day.
it took less than a moment
later on he would wonder if he knew even before he set his curious eyes on her, he
would ponder the idea of just knowing, of something being so clear and right somewhere
deep inside your core that you just knew
he would mull over the word ‘soulmates’ thinking it fell short for him and her
thinking that something about the blue eyes that rose from behind the glossy frames of
her bright blue glasses was so familiar that they couldn’t have been strangers.
she wasn’t pretty
no
she was art
she was beautiful, sure, wrapped up tight into a black dress that looked more like a second
skin than an actual dress, red plastic cup clutched in a hand of chipped yellow nail polish and
rings, laughing, dancing.
but art is more than just that, she was more than just that
art makes you feel something, art stirs something deep in your stomach, something a lot like

awe. she was art, the best kind of art

"On Board, but Not Really" by Cadence Sinclair

He invited me on his sailboat.
“Three days, and you’ll be changed forever,” he urged,
Beaming with summery promise.
Hesitation lay at the tip of my tongue.
Who wants to be stranded in the middle of the sea?
But I glanced up and immediately submitted to his hopeful, eager eyes.
“My schedule should be free.”
Really, I would have cleared it in a heartbeat.
Onboard only a week later.
A breezy, luminous, always-will-remember day,
In my floral sundress that matched the motion of the wind.
Heart racing because the waves were choppy, vengeful.
He steered us westward for hours upon hours, until the sun burst into flames at the horizon,
And nothing else mattered.
All the troubles in the world were smoldered in that sunset’s blaze,
And the leftover ashes floated up into the night sky to become the stars.
Those tragic cinders were actually little flecks of hope,
Much like humans.
Wherever we were, it didn’t matter.
Sitting so close, I ignored the chill that danced across my arms,
Only focusing on the way our sides were conjoined, the way my head drooped onto his shoulder,
Exhausted, yet wide awake,
And the way he was humming ever-so-softly.
Could have been a dream, but I doubt it.
As we swayed back and forth,
Back and forth, together,
Atop inky black waters with eternal depth,
I finally felt steady in this strange, unpredictable universe.
Suddenly I was a part of something far greater than my petty, shivering body.

Onboard, but not really.

"Spark" by Cadence Sinclair

Every human is a spark.
When we love, we fly.
When we cry, we simmer.
When we scream, we explode.
But after all is said and done,
The world is simply a spinning jumble
Of awakening and dying sparks
All at once,

All for only a delicate flash of time.

"October 17" by July Third

Walking home that day was one of the hardest things I had done in a while.
I heard him, his voice, his laugh.
But he was talking to her.
Walking in front of them holding it all in.
Thinking back to the past year and all that had changed,
Wishing none of it had.

All I wanted to do was jump into the street
Shut out the pain, the agony, the hurt.
And make it all stop.
Walking, heel toe- heel toe back straight, praying I wouldn’t fall.
Yet something held me back,
 from cowering away.

That’s when I realized
I loved it, I missed it, I craved it.
This is what I had been dreaming of.
Walking slower now, taking it all in.
Knowing I would do this everyday

For a chance to hear him.

"Where I'm From" by Victoria Lemmings

I am from the Grand Canyon painting in the foyer inked with smoky oranges and royal purples
From crackling fireplaces and smooth, dark marble countertops
I am from emerald green window shutters and warm brick home exterior
From lemon scented dish soap
I am from the busy butterfly bush teeming with life in the backyard
The crimson Japanese maple out front

I’m from eating Peeps before breakfast on Easter morning and stubborn opinions
From Sydney the dog and Dad
I’m from Eddy burping at the dinner table and Joey falling asleep watching football
And from Mom playing opera music too loud

I’m from “Wear your helmet” and “Just read a book”
From the upbeat Old Dan Tucker song
I’m from Fairfax Hospital and Czechoslovakia
Creamy mashed potatoes with melted butter and crumbly gluten free bread
From the time my dad surprised my mom with opera tickets
She was so surprised that she cried

From the thick, worn photo albums in the dusty dining room preserving all our memories

"We Call it Making Memories" by Catfish

Done up like a cigarette
laying burnt out in the streets
Only face what's in our head
We call it making memories
Living for colors
and dying for a taste
Prayers from our mothers
but we drift religion to waste
Yet in spite of our sins
we still look to the stars
we're already up there with them
polluted in our brains, but cosmic in our hearts
And we indulge this
with trembling gasps
from the aimless miss
to the climactic collapse
You say "I'm scared"
I am too
but we're courageous on a dare
and I revel with you

"Let Us Go, Then" by Leo

Let us go then, you and I,
Into my wonderful world full of lies.
Come see my many costumes and masks,
come hear of my peculiar task.
I am but a shadow to you all
most of you think of me as an oddball.
What you don’t know is that who I am everyday
Is not what’s in my DNA.
I live with a simple code.
“Others above, and me below
My sacrifice, their happiness”
This is my road.
This is the path that I choose.
This is the path where I lose.
Though I may lose, you yet stand to gain.
Even if I may be in pain.
Do not fret for I choose this path.
And will endure its neverending wrath.
This however is not a bother.
For every time it makes me stronger.
The highs and lows will come.
Something I can’t abstain from.
You will be happy and I will not.
This will happen a lot.
What you see is someone who hides.
What you see is someone who pretends.
I do this not for attention but so that I blend in.
I joke, I laugh, I talk, but ultimately its not for me.
Inside I am but a weak tired human being.
I am scared.
I am hurt.
and I am lost.
My mind is not what you expect.
It’s not all sex, drugs, and alcohol
It’s not all school, grades, or homework.
My mind is lost.
And I hope for the day when I find it.
Until that day I will continue to hide.
I will continue to stay in the shadows.
I will continue to blend in.

Because for now, it’s all I have.

"The Colors of my Life" by Ann Onimous

Red is my war paint
The nail polish I wear
When I mean business.

Orange is the juice
I only have when on trips
No one else likes it.

Yellow is the sun
That taught me the lesson that
What you love can hurt.

Green is my back yard
Lush with clovers and hastas
And our maple tree.

Blue are the oceans
Atlantic and Pacific
I will cross again.

Purple is the bruise
From when I ran and I tripped
Remember caution.

Pink is the flower,
My hibiscus, which reminds
Me of Hawaii.

Brown is the chocolate
That fills my mouth with sweetness
As I share with friends.

Black is my old life
Faded away to nothing
With the girl I was.

White is my future
Nothing but a blank canvas

Waiting for colors.

"Where I'm From" by Lola Lane

I am from white radios and an endless stream of NPR
From glasses with foggy lenses and Giant-brand graham crackers.
I am from dog hair on the couch
From the worn-out, laid back warmth.
I am from the purple tulips that live for one second in Spring
From the cherry blossom tree that plagues our house with allergies
I am from movies on Christmas and Sunday night pizza.
From Clare and Kate
I’m from losing everything that can be lost and eating too fast
And from screaming one moment and laughing the next
I’m from don’t get chocolate on your dress and you’re young, you’ll bounce back
And from be the wish you want to see in the world.
I’m from DC United games and from ice cream of course
I’m from Washington, D.C.  and Irish,
Chili and Easter egg dish.
From dad riding his bike from New Jersey to California,
In two months with 200 dollars.
I’m from the dusty photo albums under the couch,
From the adventurous, the have napped and have worked out
From the try-ers and the cry-ers,
The bold and the loud,

The ones who know not everything is worth it.

"Where I'm From" by Percival Brendan Noble the Third

I am from pencils
From oranges and chopsticks
I am from the creaky wooden floors
And cold toes that poke out from underneath the blankets.
I am from the giant tree that sits in the middle of the backyard
The bamboo that grows from behind the shed

I’m from opening presents the night before Christmas Eve and foodies
From Mom and Dad and Michelle and Yvonne
From Gu je 1
From A yi 1 and 2
From Kauh fu 1 and 2 and 3 and 4
From Suk suk 1 and 2 and 3 and 4
I am from Yvonne hogging all the juice boxes
And Dad playing chinese chess

I’m from eating every grain of rice in my bowl
And saying hello to all my family members before doing anything
And knowing all the Barney songs by heart
I’m from red envelopes at Christmas, Chinese New Year, and birthdays
Mushy rice and ginger and medicine soup
From Michelle hiding in her room all the time because she is such a teenager
From photo album after photo album filled with my 90s-child selfies

I am from hating Kindergarten with every fiber of my being
But letting school seep into every aspect of my life
I am from skirting around my culture
And suddenly embracing it with an unexpected pride and passion
I am from China (and Vietnam) but also Arlington Hospital
From two different worlds

That have merged into one

"The Four Seasons" by Platonic Soulmate

Spring is joyful and bright,
The sun comes out and makes things right.
As flowers of all colors bloom,
Rain clouds overhead loom.
The warm weather comes as the cold weather goes,
The windy wind blows as a green tree grows.

Summer sneaks up on us like a little critter,
The sun shines on the water and glitters.
The blazing sun heats up the weather.
Young birds try out their new feathers.
Bright fireworks are shot in the night sky
And soon enough summer ends and says good-bye.

Autumn comes around, the forest leaves start to change
From red to orange, the possible colors have a huge range.
As leaves on the trees then begin to fall.
Squirrels gather nuts to stuff in their tree home walls.
The weather gets colder as the sun sets sooner.
Make sure to adjust your violins with a good tuner.

Winter is finally here as people wait for the first snow.
Most people would love to stay in bed watching their favorite show.
The roads and sidewalks begin to freeze
As people might go out to eat for some Chinese.
The New Year approaches soon and the cycle repeats again.
The four seasons are finally done, amen.

"Kyrielle for Bonnie and Clyde" by Naomi Jean Lewis

He laughs out loud with eyes of stars
His heart tattooed with jagged scars
He smiles at me, like Hell-fire bright
We drive on through the moonless night

Fighting and swerving on the road
Weary-souled, but we keep our load
Highbeams fly by with fading light
We drive on through the moonless night

Bullets with our names, carved in deep
We flee on to our bandit’s keep
Escaping home; we nuzzle, bite
We drive on through the moonless night

Happiness is your hand, my gun
Baptized in blood, we became one
Our stolen car rumbles with might
We drive on through the moonless night

No place is safe from hired men
Like Daniel in the lions’ den
We’re on the run in constant flight
We drive on through the moonless night

Two sinners’ souls, ‘neath the sky
We won’t say, “no” and won’t say, “bye”
Together our burden is light

We drive on through the moonless night

"Pantoum for a Scapegoat" by Hiram McDaniels

Note from the author: a pantoum is a poetic style where lines are repeated. But this isn't really a proper pantoum since I changed some words and the order..

I leaned on the railing the night that you lied.
The porch bulb swung gently, a spark still inside.
A sallow-winged moth, entranced by the sight,
Meandered in fruitless pursuit of the light.

The porch swing swung gently. A spark stilled inside me.
Who knew now what other foul truths you denied me?
I stalked off in fruitless pursuit of the light.
The doubt of you followed me into the night.

I knew now there were other truths you’d denied
As the shovel and pickaxe I deftly applied.
Not even you followed me into the night.
You just clutched at the porch-swing and said they were right.

The pick and the spade having been well-applied,
A dark plastic sheet in the earth I espied.
I clutched at the handle and knew they were right.
The truth of it tore at my heart like a bite.

A dark wrapped-up shape in the sheet I espied.
My hands with its dust, red and flaking, were dyed.
You warn with no bark. You’ve a deadlier bite.
Then, floodlights and sirens, all blindingly bright.

A sallow-winged moth burned up at the sight
Of floodlights and sirens, all blindingly bright.
My hands with your sin, red and blatant, were dyed.
I hung by the neck for the night that you lied

"Ivy League School" by Monica Cody
